CardioVision 2020 Commends Olmsted County Board on Smoke-Free Leadership
By a 5-2 vote of the Olmsted County Board, Olmsted County has enacted Minnesota’s first county-wide smoke-free restaurant ordinance. CardioVision 2020 Project Director Thomas E. Kottke, M.D., says the county approach makes sense. “This is a public health issue, and counties already license restaurants through their public health departments. When the county board members saw the data on health risks, they did what responsible leaders do. They led in the public interest.”
The Olmsted County ordinance was the result of several years of work by interested citizens, says Rebecca Hoffman, CardioVision 2020’s operations director. “Many community organizations and scores of citizens have actively participated in this educational effort. Thousands of others have contacted their elected officials to show their support, and have also voted with their pocketbooks by patronizing smoke-free establishments. We finally reached a critical mass, with more than half of area restaurants going smoke-free voluntarily and seeing that it was not only a good health decision, but also good for business.”
The ordinance goes into effect January 1, 2002.
